Hello and welcome skin care lovers!!!

“Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself”

— Coco Chanel

Introduction to my skincare blog 🙂

Hello everyone! My name is Hailey Hoffman and this is my new blog! This blog has been created for my lovely fundamentals of digital & online media class! I am dedicating this blog to skin care reviews. I am excited to begin this journey with everyone!

More about me: I am originally from Mansfield, Texas, which is a nice suburb outside of Dallas, Texas. I now live in San Marcos, Texas, as I am strengthening my education at Texas State University. In my free time I like to experiment with makeup, hang out with my friends/boyfriend, and color in adult coloring books! I am obviously also incredibly passionate about skin care & taking care of oneself. If you would like to follow me on social media you can find me on Twitter & Instagram !

This is my grandma and I at my high school graduation party! Wanted y’all to see what I actually look like.

Why skin care?: Skin care has always been something I’ve been interested in, but up until about a year ago I wasn’t ever super serious about it. When I was younger, I had uncontrollable acne. Me and my friend sometimes still look back at pictures from then & I’m still blown away at how bad I let it get. I started becoming interested in skin care because of Pinterest. In my Pinterest feed I would always see posts from girls who found “the product,” which made me become more interested. I began trying some new skin care, especially face masks, and found a love for the way my skin would feel if I properly took care of it. I feel that now that I know a lot more about different skin care types and brands, so I thought it would be fun to embark on this journey through a blog!

My hopes: I hope that this blog will bring more knowledge to beginners in the skin care world who want to try something new, just as I do! I will be posting regularly about a different skin care product & I will review the product with a score of 1-10 & give my honest thoughts and opinions. A disclaimer I would like to make is that I have very dry skin, whereas some people struggle with oily skin. I will be trying products of all sorts to show the difference that makes to people of different skin types. In every post I will remind everyone that I do have dry skin, so products may work differently on your skin than they would mine. When giving the review I will give my opinion of which skin type is most likely targeted for the product being used.

My Audience: My target audience is definitely skin care beginners who don’t know what type of products do what. I want my blog to be thorough enough where even the newest beginner has clarity to what the product being reviewed really does & if it will help them or not. I want my audience to feel like they are sitting right next to me, with my help at hand at how to apply the product, how to take it off, what it’s really supposed to do, and even how your skin looks the next day or two. All of these things are important, so if you don’t really know a lot about the whole process, this is definitely targeted at you!

Closing thoughts: I am going to go ahead & throw out there that Lush and Herbivore are my favorite skin care brands by far. I am going to challenge myself by getting out of the routines I already have with those brands, and try to mix it up with new products I haven’t used! There will probably be a compilation of moisturizers, serums, and face masks! I want this to feel like a safe place for all people who are simply in need of a product recommendation!

Thank you so much for reading! My first official blog post will be up within a week!

Til’ next time- Hails ❤

My Experience this Semester

Hey everyone! Hope all is well, and everyone is staying safe during this crazy pandemic.

I made this blog for a semester long project for my fundamentals of digital and online media class (also known as FDOM). Throughout the course of the semester I have had several different opinions about this project, but never-the-less I am very glad that this was assigned. This post is my final thoughts about how this process went and how I could have improved. I hope you enjoy!

If I could go back and improve anything I would learn more about the aesthetic and themes I could have incorporated on the home page. I kept the default mountain image on my home page and only changed the color scheme of it. I wish the layout looked a little different and the opening image actually had something to do with skincare. I could have put more information in the Twitter promotions to get people’s attention. I usually only posted the hashtags and the title of the review. My best experience of the project was realizing how important skincare is to me and my everyday routine and then implementing it into my posts. I go in more depth about this in my “About” page if you want the more personal note on that. This experience will benefit my future because I have so much practice in writing about product and all their aspects. One tool I learned about because of this project is embedding hyperlink into your text. After I learned how to do this I went crazy with it. Each post only needed one external hyperlink, but I often added more just because I think it’s neat. I will definitely need this tool for my future endeavors no matter what job I have. The whole blog project in general will help with my future career because I am more credible in my writing and posting abilities.

My stats

In regard to my site statistics, they were fairly low, but I didn’t expect too many visitors to my site in the first place. My most popular week was February 3rd through the 9th. That’s around the time when I posted my initial welcome post; I had 25 views and 2 visitors that week. My most popular post was my first review of the Sephora clay mask with a total of 22 views. I think this post was the most popular because it was the first review and people wanted to see what my blog was about. Out of all my site stats data the most surprising thing was that someone in Russia read my blog! I have no idea who it was of course, but it was really interesting to see what countries people had viewed my page from. My social media stats are strange to me because on one of my recent posts about the Pixi Peel and Polish I had 390 impressions on Twitter, but according to WordPress the actual post only got 1 view. It goes to show that the way you promote your content is actually a very important part of the process.

I haven’t decided yet if I’m going to continue to use this blog or not after this post. I am currently thinking about making a new page altogether, but I might just alter this one a little bit. I want to give a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me and read my posts. This semester has been incredibly rough for me and this blog was something that I could look forward to and I’m very thankful for that.

As always you can subscribe to my blog to get email updates for every time I upload a new post! As I just said I’m not sure about the future of this page, so if you subscribe and never get any emails about me then I’m likely using another page which will also be promoted through my twitter account.

Stay beautiful my skincare lovers,

-Hails ❤

Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask!

This is the Blue Tansy Resurfacing Clarity Mask by Herbivore! I’ve reviewed a couple of their products before and I highly recommend the brand overall. I’m excited to share what I thought about this product!

Same as all my reviews, you can click here and it will pull up a webpage from Herbivore’s site with all the product information.

Before applying this product be sure you wash your face well. Before applying this product my skin looked okay because my face had been cleaned, but it was still looking a bit dry and as always I have some acne on my face. According to Herbivore, this product is supposed to clarify acne-prone skin and sooth redness. Both of those are things I struggle with on my face, so I was super excited to use this product! It also says the mask is good for oily or blemish prone skin. I have dry skin, so I was a little nervous about it being good for oily skin, but I definitely have blemish prone skin, so I was hopeful it would still work.

How the mask looks on the skin

To use this product it says to apply a thin layer of the mask to clean skin, leave on for 15-20 minutes, and rinse off. I used my silicone mask “brush” to lay the product down all over my face and smooth it out. Once it was evenly applied I waited the 15 minutes before rinsing it off. Now, as much as wanted this to be my new favorite product, it started making my skin tingle immediately after applying and it lasted until I washed it off. The website does say that tingling may occur and that it’s normal, but it was on the verge of stinging. I didn’t want to leave the product on my skin for the whole 15 minutes, but because the website said it was normal I figured I should leave it.

After washing the product off, I will say it left a pretty sheen to my skin which was nice. I also liked that it made my skin feel firm afterwards. I was honestly happy with the results, but before too long my skin started tingling again. This tingling lasted until I went to sleep, and it was highly uncomfortable. I wouldn’t describe my skin as being sensitive to almost any products, but this one was the exception. I’m torn because I like the way it made my skin look after using it, but it burned so bad I don’t know how often I would actually use it.

Overall, I’m going to give this product a 3/10. The packaging is a nice weighty glass which I love. The price is a bit high for me to want to repurchase, but the ingredients are good and because of that I feel like it is a fair price. I personally used the mini version from the Balance and Clarify mini collection, which as a whole I would recommend. The score is in the middle because I did like what it did for my skin, but I don’t think I’m willing to risk the stinging of my skin for this product. There are other, cheaper products that can do the same thing. It says for sensitive skin to leave on for only 5 minutes, so I may try that in the future to see if the result is any different, but I wouldn’t usually describe my skin as sensitive.

I hope you enjoyed this skincare review! If you want to see more of my reviews, you can subscribe to my blog for email updates every time I upload a new post!

Stay happy and healthy everyone!

Pixi Peel and Polish!

This is the Pixi beauty Peel and Polish resurfacing concentrate! This brand is on the come up recently and they’re starting to get more attention. I am super excited to give you my thoughts on this product!

Same as all my reviews, you can click here and the webpage with all the product information will pop up for you.

Because this is a type of exfoliant, I used this before my shower and then once I got in the shower I rinsed it off. You don’t have to do it this way, you can always just rinse it off over the sink, I just prefer it this way. My skin has been breaking out a lot recently due to stress about COVID-19, so prior to the mask I had a lot of dead skin over some of my problem areas. According to Pixi’s website the Peel and Polish is supposed to resurface for smoother, softer, glowing looking skin. They say to leave it on for 2 minutes before rinsing it off, so I let it sit while my shower got warm.

How the sugar looks

As I started massaging the product around my skin I immediately noticed that it expands to create this white cast over the face. I tried to capture a picture to show you, but it would disappear back into regular looking sugar before I had the chance; it only did it when I was actually rubbing it in. I also liked that its sugar wasn’t too rough on my skin. I’ve used a coffee bean exfoliant on my face before and it felt super rough, the Peel and Polish on the other hand is the perfect gentleness for the sensitive skin on your face. I also liked that while I waited the 2 minutes for it to settle it didn’t burn or tingle on my skin. Sometimes exfoliants will make your skin tingle, which is fairly uncomfortable, but not with this one. Overall I am very pleased with the application of this product.

With the sugar on my face

After applying this product I will say it brought a pretty, natural glow to my skin. I could also see a difference between the dryness I had before applying the product to after using it because the product made my problem areas look a bit better as you can see on my forehead. I loved how gentle the product felt on my skin, it didn’t feel like it was tearing my skin, rather that it was just ridding the dead skin.

After applying the product

Overall, I would give this product a 9/10! I really only took off for the packaging because it is pretty simple. Other than that I would say this product is staying in my collection and I look forward to using it again! I also think the price is fair; for a full sized bottle it’s $24 and if you want to try out the mini version it’s only $6! If you’re looking for a new resurfacing exfoliant I highly recommend the Pixi Peel and Polish!

I hope you enjoyed this skincare review! If you want to see more of my reviews, you can subscribe to my blog for email updates every time I upload a new post!

Stay happy and healthy my skincare lovers!

Why Jenni Raincloud Inspires me!

Welcome back to my blog everyone! Today I am going to share a little bit about Jenni Raincloud and her skincare that she personally makes and sells! I am incredibly inspired by her and love her content!

From her Etsy page
From her Etsy page

Jenni Raincloud is a lifestyle blogger who especially covers natural skincare remedies. She has also been an aesthetician for over a decade and is very knowledgeable about all thing’s beauty and self-care. She has a shop on Etsy called JRainCloudOrganics where you can purchase skincare items for a very decent price. On her blog she also teaches you how to DIY your own products similar to hers in order to use natural ingredients on your skin instead of toxic chemicals that some brands include in their products. I have recently started reading some of her posts and I love the content she creates and the message she imposes.

What makes her blog special is that she isn’t afraid to be truthful about the ugly side of the beauty industry. She has a page dedicated to her story and beliefs where she even states that “Europe has banned 100’s of harmful ingredients in their skincare, the US has banned around 10,” which is why some people are skeptical of skincare in general in the US. Using natural ingredients rather than chemicals allows your skin to really seep in the product and put it to use because it better correlates with the. body. I also love that although she makes her own natural products, she still has a post dedicated to her favorite over the counter products as well. Everything is done in moderation.

I appreciate her openly talking about the pros of natural products, and she inspires me to remember to check ingredients and be aware of the products I’m putting on my body. Over the past few years my family has implemented several natural remedy products, but now being in college my challenge is to remember the benefits of doing so and reading her blog allows me to be more conscious about those decisions. I love that she focuses not on the negatives of products, but the positives of the natural products she teaches her followers how to make and use. I also appreciate that she uses the metaphor “food for your skin” because it reiterates the importance of our bodies inside and even outside. She gives me immense hope that clean products can easily be a reality in the beauty community.

I hope you enjoyed reading about Jenni Raincloud’s blog, and feel free to go check her out and show some support! I am very thankful for her content and the positivity she radiates!

Remember you can subscribe to my blog for email updates for every time I make a new post! I hope everyone is doing okay during the quarantine!

See you soon, Hails ❤

Jasmine Green Tea Balancing Toner!

Today I am going to review the Jasmine Green Tea Balancing Toner by Herbivore! Before we start I would like to add that I had other skincare products I was excited to review, but due to the coronavirus outbreak and Texas State University’s extended spring break I am not able to review those products currently. I would usually never review two items of the same brand in a row, but that’s our reality this week. I am also going to cut the review slightly so that I can address the coronavirus effects on the beauty community.

Prior to applying the toner

I am super excited to be showing you this product because it’s one of my go to products when I’m on the run! As always, you can click here and it will take you to the product page so you can see all the information and ingredients. Although I do use this product fairly regularly, I will still give it a fair review. So, prior to adding the product I noticed that my skin was a little red toned, dry as always, and very acne-prone. Unlike my other reviews, I applied this product during the day so my skin wasn’t as dull as usual. I suggest spraying about 6 inches away from your face for maximum product usage.

After applying the toner

After applying the toner my skin was incredibly shiny and I even think it changed some of the undertones in my skin to make me look more lively. It was also pretty sticky which can be somewhat annoying for a couple minutes on a bare face, but would be great for applying makeup. Pro tip: when spraying any product whether it’s hairspray or a toner like this one, move your phone out of the way because the spray will make your phone screen gross. I also like that the bottle is glass, it makes it feel more weighty and expensive. The only thing is that since it is glass, you must be careful when traveling with it. It also has a fresh scent that I LOVE!

Overall I am going to give this product a 9/10! I personally think this is a great product to spray on your face really quick while you’re running out the door for a subtle luminosity that will make you look more lively. This is a great product for people who are busy, but still like to practice self care. I. didn’t give this a 10 because it is pretty sticky and I’m afraid that people with oily skin might not like that feeling over their oils. It does specify that it is best for redness and dry skin, but if someone who has red toned oily skin wants to try this it may not be the best look. Lastly, it is $39 which can be expensive for a facial spray, so just like the last review you can click here and it will take you to a page where you can buy it in a bundle with some other great products for $49 which I do think is a fair price.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that the Coronavirus has basically taken over the world. Schools, restaurants, stores, etc. are closing so that people can practice social distancing during this pandemic. With that being said, Ulta stores will be closing this Thursday at 6 PM and Sephora’s have started closing today, March 17th. I encourage everyone to practice social distancing as much as possible, and if you are at an Ulta before they close pay close attention to make sure the product you’re buying is new and not tampered with. A lot of people will open a non-tester item and check it out for themselves and then put it back on the shelf. I am going to attach a couple articles from Allure, The New York Times, and Ulta themselves for you all to check out if you wish to know more about what this looks like for the beauty community.

I hope you enjoyed this review of the Jasmine Green Tea Balancing Toner! If you would like to continue on this journey you can always subscribe to my blog for email updates every time I make a new post! If you haven’t already, go check out my latest post about the Prism 5% Exfoliating Glow Potion!

Be smart & safe my skincare lovers, ❤ Hails

Prism 5% Exfoliating Glow Potion Review!

This is the Prism 5% Exfoliating Glow Potion by the brand Herbivore! Most people are unaware about this brand, so hopefully I can explain why people are raving about this stuff! I personally have used this product along with many other Herbivore products, so I’m excited to do an official review on this glow potion!

Same as the clay mask, you can click here, and a webpage will pull up with all the details about the product such as ingredients and how to use this product.

My skin prior to application.

As I stated last time, I like to do my skin care after getting out of the shower, so I know my face is clean and ready for product! Before applying anything, I like to take a good look at my skin to see what the problems are prior to using the product. As you can see, my skin looks extremely dull, I have a lot of problematic acne on my skin unfortunately, and my skin is quite dry and flakey, especially around my problem areas. According to Herbivore, this product is allegedly supposed to hydrate, even the appearance of your skin tone, and smooth & clarify. Says it is suitable for all skin types, but people with sensitive skin should spot test first.

To apply this product the site says to apply 4-8 drops and massage the serum into the skin. I started by adding 1 full drop to both cheeks and my forehead and added about half of a full drop to my nose, chin, and cupids bow(skin above your lip and below your nose). After I applied, I began massaging the product into my skin as evenly as possible. I immediately began to feel quite moisturized and as I kept massaging the product into my skin, dead skin flakes started to come off in my hands. I don’t know how it exfoliates since it’s only a liquid, but it actually does work!

Side view post application.
Front view post application.

After applying the product I was happy to see my skin already looking much more lively and not so dull, it really did add quite a bit of color to my face. I also noticed that it left my face very tacky, so this would be good to use before applying makeup because the makeup will stick to your skin better. It gave a subtle sheen to my skin which is always nice for a luminous look. I’m not so sure that it evened out my skin tone much, which is a bummer because I have discoloration all over my face, but what it did do was very impressive. I will also add that my skin gets red very easily so my acne spots probably look a tad bit more red after using than before, but that doesn’t bother me a whole lot because I’m used to it.

Yes, a positive review! Overall, I would give this product an 8/10! The packaging is a nice weighty glass, so it feels nice and luxury. However; for a full-size bottle of the Herbivore Prism 5% Exfoliating Glow Potion it’s $44 on sale right now, regular price is $62. Now, I know this is probably pretty expensive skin care for most, so if you still want the product, or even want to try some other great products from Herbivore, you can buy a mini collection that has this glow potion plus a toner, facial oil, and a resurfacing mask for $49 ($63 value). For the 4 products in this bundle I do think the $49 is fair, and they go together to make the perfect routine! I do think this product works on all skin types as well, for dry skin it gives you some color and moisture and for oily skin it’s going to give the moisture your skin needs without leaving any super shiny residue. I love this product and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good serum!

That is all for todays review and I hope you learned something new! You can always subscribe to my blog to get email updates when I post. Also, feel free to check out last weeks review for the Sephora Purple Clay Mask!

See ya next week, ❤ Hails

Sephora Purple Clay Mask Review!

This is the Sephora collection purple clay mask that I tested out today! I have never used a clay type mask before, so this was very fun and interesting!

To find product information, it’s easiest to find the product online and select it, and then if you scroll down there are usually a couple tabs you can choose from that have information about the product. Included in this is usually the instructions and the claims for the product. To find out more about this clay mask you can click here and see all product details.

My skin prior to using the mask! Please excuse the breakouts on my face.

To begin you always want to apply masks to a clean face, so when I do a mask, I usually apply it right after I get out of the shower, so I know my skin is clean. Before I applied the mask to my face, I like to get a good look at my skin so after I take the mask off, I can see how much the product really did. When doing this I noticed my skin was very flakey and dry as usual. It was also a bit dull because I hadn’t applied any other products to my skin of course.

This is how the mask looks on the skin!

Application was alright, the website never specified how to apply it, so I just went old school and used my fingers. When applying it with my fingers it didn’t leave the most perfect layer over my whole face, but it wasn’t that big of a deal. It suggests to leave the product on for 15 minutes, so that’s just what I did.

My skin after taking off the mask.

Taking the product off was fine, came off fairly easily and I didn’t need a towel, just the water and my hands which was nice. Pro tip: when drying your face any time after it’s been wet ALWAYS pat your face with a soft towel very gently. Don’t swipe the towel on your face because it pulls your skin and causes aging and wrinkles. After drying my skin I was honestly shocked in a bad way. I seriously don’t think the mask did anything for my skin, and it was honestly about as dull at the end as it was when I started.

It sucks that the first review is negative, but I have to be honest! I would give this product a 3/10. The packaging is okay and everything about this product was really just lackluster. It claims it’s for all skin types, which I actually disagree with. I would say that this is a good hydrating product for people who have more oily skin, because it didn’t leave any luminosity. For $8 I don’t think it’s worth it. Might as well stick to your routine.

I hope you enjoyed my review on the Sephora Purple Clay Mask! Don’t forget you can subscribe to my blog for email updates every time I make a new post! If you haven’t already, go check out my introduction post!

See ya next time, ❤ Hails
